Dada Olalekan is the Lead Consultant/Information Architect at Don Dada Technologies. He is a Graduate of Computer & Information Science and has over 15 years’ hands on experience as a Web & Digital professional with expertise in Website Development, e-Commerce Development, Social Media Management  and more. He has grown the company from a home-based start-up (after working with Lead City University, Ibadan as the pioneer webmaster: 2003-2008) to a Global digital firm with over 120 clients. (both Local and International).

He is currently an IT Consultant for Dominion University Ibadan, Oyo State and Westland University Iwo, Osun State, amongst others.

Google drive to delete trashed files after 30 days,effective from October 13th,2020.

Google is changing how Google Drive handles trashed files and documents. Starting on October 13th, files in the trash will automatically delete after 30 days. The change means that Drive’s trash will work the same way as other Google products, like Gmail, for more consistent behavior across all of Google’s products.

Previously, Google Drive would keep files in the trash indefinitely unless you went in and emptied the trash to actually delete them for real, making it less of a “trash” and more of a way to just hide files you didn’t want to see. Administrators for G Suite will also still have the power to restore items that are deleted from the trash for up to 25 days for active users, so if you accidentally lost a critical work document, there’s still a chance to save it.

While the automatic trashing feature might be frustrating to some users, there may be actual benefits, too, since Google counts trashed files that aren’t deleted toward your Drive storage quota.

To make sure everyone is aware of the feature, Google will also add a banner notification to Google Drive as well as the specific Google Docs and Google Forms apps.

Do You Know Your Post Code?

What is a Postal Code?

We all know what postal code is, but not many of us know the technical (or historical) details behind it. For starters, ZIP is the abbreviation for Zone Improvement Plan. This was a system initiated in by the Post Office Department to handle increasing mail volumes by categorizing the U.S. into well-defined areas – making it one of the most organized and mature addressing systems in the world. The code became a tool for organizing and displaying demographic information while also allowing for the efficient sorting and dispatching of mail.

Over the span of 50 years, the ZIP Code was expanded from 5 digits to 9 and then to 11, with each digit indicative of the address location. With just the ZIP Code, it was easy to sort mails right down to the postal zone of a specific area or locality.

A Quick Lesson in History

Back in the 1940s, mail sorting was done manually. The Post Office Department’s mail staff depended entirely on local addresses and hand sorting addresses with postal offices. Post-war, the economic boom created an increase in mail volumes by 160%. Banks and companies began sending advertising mail to customers across the country. It became overwhelming for mail staff to manually sort through mails, while also ensuring they were delivered to the right addresses. During all this time, mail sorting was a laborious work which caused extended delays and erroneous deliveries. It took 8 to 10 employees to handle one mailed letter!

With the industrial boom, forward-thinking Postmasters attempted to create a system that would increase efficiency and reduce the manual sorting effort. In 1943, The program started the creation of a standardized coding system that would allow for easy mail grouping for distribution, logistics and transportation routing.

The system divided large cities into multiple 2-digit figures which would later be called local zone numbers. This 2-digit code helped the mail system with easy distribution, but it was limited to just the big cities, making it difficult to handle mails from other regions.

In 1944, Postal Inspector Robert Moon proposed the use of a 3-digit code system to categorize areas of the country by sectional center codes – which are central post offices of that region.

In 1983, the Postal Service expanded on the ZIP Code again, adding an additional +4 digits to the code. This 4-digit expansion would identify city blocks, streets or an office building. Today, the ZIP Code has been expanded to 11 digits, with each expansion adding a newer layer of information and adding to the accuracy of the address. As machines become more sophisticated with location precision, the ZIP Code plays an even more important role in ensuring the delivery of mail without the need of any additional written information.

Nigeria Postal Codes

Nigeria Postal Codes are numerics that consist of six digits numbers. According to NIPOST, the Nigerian nation is divided into nine regions which makes up the first digit of the code.

The code of each region represents the first number, while the second and third digits when combined with the first, make up the dispatch district for out sorting. The last three digit stands for the delivery location which can be a rural area, an urban area or a post office facility.
The principal post head office in every region has a postal code that ends with 0001. For Instance, Ikeja HQ in Lagos is 100001; the lowest postcode is 100001 while the highest postcode is 982002.

The 3-digit code introduced by Moon was incorporated with the earlier 2-digit code to make a 5-digit code that provided information on the area, the code of the central office and the small post offices or postal zones that followed it. The use of ZIP Codes significantly reduced wrong deliveries and improved mail delivery services.

How are ZIP Codes Important for Businesses?

ZIP Codes are not just numbers that identify a location. They have become social identifiers – giving information on the demographics of the people of a certain region. Companies use Zip Codes as important data structures that give them a visual representation of their audience. With this information, companies are making major marketing decisions including the closing or opening of stores, launching new products or services and pivoting sales data into regions. ZIP Codes are POWERFUL and as such, it is necessary for any business to have VALID and ACCURATE ZIP codes.

Incomplete, Invalid ZIP Codes as the Biggest Challenge to Address Data Quality

In an age when businesses get data from multiple sources, the address data is usually flawed, incomplete or invalid. Human entry of data is often the cause of errors, typos, punctuation marks, wrong or mistyped ZIP Codes etc. Not to mention some people may also enter fake addresses making your data inaccurate and invalid. It is therefore important for organizations to verify their address data source to ensure that they have complete information for statistical analysis.

Other than fake or incomplete data, most address codes are also plagued with letters or punctuation marks that have no use in the code. These issues, though seemingly minor become major bottlenecks for businesses when they attempt to use their data for analysis. Flawed data also leads to flawed analysis – imagine the consequences of making a business decision based on flawed data!

While flawed data is one critical challenge, another major problem is that of addresses that do not comply with the address code. This means that businesses are storing and making use of address data that may not even be valid and neither is it verified for authenticity, leaving the business at legal, financial and operational risks.

Zoom, Microsoft and Apple take on remote learning challenges as kids head back to school

As school districts nationwide welcome students in August and September, teachers are facing an unprecedented number of hurdles. How do you keep students engaged when hands-on activities are limited? How do you take control of a classroom when discipline options are few and far between?

Many instructors got a trial run in March when classes were forced to go remote as the coronavirus spread throughout the globe. Tech helped buoy the transition and is playing a more central role as schools figure out what to do next.

Still, parents are facing what could be months of tech-related hurdles to overcome as they help keep kids focused on education from their homes.

Big tech companies like Microsoft, Apple and Google have responded to remote learning by bolstering their education offerings, which teachers say has been a lifeline in a sea of uncertainty. Zoom has also made some online learning updates, such as removing the 40-minute time limit for schools.

On Thursday, Zoom announced the ways it claims its video conferencing service will better facilitate remote school in the months ahead.

In a blogpost addressed to teachers, the video software company said it’s adding new controls to minimize disruptions and its enhancing tools related to focus groups.

To prevent Zoom bombings, teachers have an option that only allows authenticated users to join. That means participants would have to be signed into Zoom accounts using their school’s domain. Instructors can also require a meeting passcode to join.

Teachers will be able to disable video for individual students and create a virtual classroom seating arrangement, according to Zoom. And students will be able to hop from one focus group to another with ease.


Microsoft enhanced its Teams for Education platform to add tools specifically geared toward remote and hybrid learning situations.

It added a Together Mode to video calls, which brings all students into the same view to mimic what a teacher sees in a traditional classroom. It also added Live Reactions, live captions and transcripts for video meetings to enhance accessibility.

Leveling-up the features on Teams was meant to “extend the boundaries and borders of the classroom,” according to Anthony Salcito, vice president of worldwide education, at Microsoft.

Over 180,000 learning institutions currently use Microsoft Teams.


Apple has taken a varied approach to support educators and students in today’s distance learning environment.

Apple also launched a new Learning from Home website that offers tools and resources like instructional videos and webinars for teachers.


Google recently announced a number of upcoming tools meant to make virtual education easier.

The company is adding updates to its Google Meet conferencing platform, including a larger tiled view that can show up to 49 meeting participants at time. Google first launched its tile view, which allows instructors to see what more students are doing, in April.

But users could only view 16 participants in one glance. That wouldn’t work for classes with upwards of 30 students and more.

Since then, the company’s education arm has “seen all the ways that we need to adapt our tools to meet the challenges of a world relying on distance learning,” said Zach Yeskel, group product manager for Google for Education.

“Teachers have told us that it’s especially challenging to keep students engaged virtually, so we’re introducing a whole set of features that brings the best practices from an in-person classroom into the digital class.”

The tech giant also adding more moderation tools, so teachers can prevent disruptive students from joining meetings after they’ve been digitally kicked out or denied from entering twice.

Google is also flipping the switch on a setting that won’t start a meeting until the teacher has joined.

The most dangerous virus ever created in the form of a worm is called ILOVEYOU. It attacked by replicating itself and crashing systems. It first arrived through e-mail messages as a love letter from a secret admirer. Once the email was opened and the attachment is clicked on, the virus spread fast.


It is predicted that by the year 2033, there would be anonymous robots that are designed to kill. It is understood that these robots can certainly spare a lot of human life, but they are also capable of identifying targets and killing them without any human input.


There are now smart water bottles that track a user’s water consumption, smart medical pill bottles that remind patients to take their pills, and innovative alcohol bottles that help consumers ensure authenticity of the product.


While it took the iPod just 3 years to reach a market audience of 50 million, it took radio 38 years and television, 13 years to reach the same market audience.


To combat global warming, scientists are proposing creative ways to artificially cool the atmosphere by either blocking the sun’s rays or sucking up excess CO2. The plan is to “hack” the planet back into shape.


In February 2009, Google tweeted for the first time ever on Twitter. The tweet was “I’m 01100110 01100101 01100101 01101100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101100 01110101 01100011 01101011 01111001 00001010.” When translated from binary into English, the tweet says “I’m feeling lucky.”
